TAILORING

This department was the very beginning of WIT. At the start, Kamila Tyabji bought material from Bombay market, took it home, cut it into lengths for sari petticoats and then gave it to local women to take away and stitch in their homes. After a few years, the project had flourished and expanded and moved to the present premises at Panvel and Mahim in Mumbai. The tailoring department is now WIT’s regular source of income. It thrives and depends on the productivity of numerous home-based workers. These women travel from the outlying areas to receive their work for the week, which is subsequently done in their own homes. Each worker is paid per piece. The tailoring department has grown and diversified. There are two units, one based at Panvel and one at Mahim. Each unit is run by a supervisor who oversees the whole production process. This includes the cutting, sewing, and final quality checks before the products are ready for sale. The supervisor trains the girls who may work under her until they are skilled enough to take the material home and work on their own. The girls learn finishing techniques such as piping, rolling, fringing, embroidery, appliqué and quilting. A complete range of household linen and soft furnishings, gift items and fashion wear is produced either to the customer’s design or to ours. The finished articles include bedspreads, cushion covers, aprons, appliance covers, scarves, and wall hangings.
